10k, more running, cooking

Today I completed my first 10k!

It was tough. My goal was to finish in an hour and 30 mins. And I did! 17 sec under actually. Along the way I had to stop and walk to catch my breath. But I’m proud of myself for this achievement.

More races are in my future for sure!

In fact I have committed myself to running more consistently once school lets out. It is my ultimate personal goal to be an avid runner.

So I was strolling through Instagram (follow me @jazch) and saw that Bryant Terry has a new cookbook out. Afro-Vegan brings African, Caribbean, and Southern flavors to the veggies! How fantastic! My personal goal #2 is to cook more and experiment with more flavors. AND…blog about it!

I have plans I tell you! Plans!

In the meantime I will drool over this book, study the ingredients, and make mental notes.

Yoga and Other Things

Well that was fantastic!

After that yoga practice I feel like I can conquer the world!

And with that energy I’ve registered for a 10k run. Tomorrow I will wake up and think “What have I done?!” But what is done is done. I may not run the whole 6.5 miles, but I am determined to at least run the majority of the race.

Now this snow needs to let up so I can get some outdoor runs. Until then training will happen in my gym on the treadmill.

I’m so motivated!

Stay tuned for more updates.

Did you follow this afternoon’s practice? How do you feel? Have any training tips? Please share.

Going Back to Green

Hello all!

Can you believe I have some free time? Well I thought my car was about to do some crazy stuff so I took some time off work to take it to the mechanic. Turns out nothing is wrong with it. Well nothing that will stop it from driving. So here I am. Just completed an assignment. Roaming the webs and looking over some footage that I created in iMovies.

I have been playing with the idea of creating video content. Eek! Scary thought. I am a huge Youtube watcher. There is a video for just about anything on the Tubes. For years I have been encouraged, inspired, and motivated by some fabulous Youtubers. These people pour out all their energy to create useful footage for folks. Some love them others hate them, but they are not deterred.

Simply fantastic!

So maybe I will not be a fabulous web personality, but I’d like to get involved; however little, in this movement. I have things I’d like to share. Hopefully I can build a community who would like to listen. Ultimately, my goal is to learn. I do not know it all. I want to be able to connect with people who can teach me something new.

In this video I talk about some of the green products that I use in my house. I have always been green conscious, but I have laxed a little. So recently I have decided to return my focus to living as green and earth conscious as possible. Clearly, consumption is NOT at the core of green thinking. In fact, I believe spending less is quite possibly the greatest act of green thinking. Think about it. Spending less means less use of emissions, and less paper and plastic waste. Most of all, you save money! However, as I am returning to green, I am not that savvy. Of course I want to get into making my own products, but as a busy young professional and grad student, homesteading does not fit into my lifestyle just yet. So I’m taking small steps to becoming more green. Typically I prefer local over big box stores. But I sometimes have a hard time rebelling against them because they carry the products that I need. So I work within my options.

I say all this just to say, I’m learning. Or relearning because I’ve forgotten everything. I’m no green certified maven that got all the answers. But I am a librarian so research is my thing. And as I learn I share.

So enjoy the video.

Share your thoughts. What changes are you making to be more environmentally conscious? Can you offer some practical tips?

Snow Day

Well hello! I know. I know. I have neglected Vegetarian Lifestyle. Shame on me.

I’m here now so…

It has been a snowy night and day in Baltimore. Thankfully I have the day off so I don’t have to brave the messiness. Normally I’d go to yoga, but decided to hangout around the condo. After being shocked out of my sleep by a text message from a friend at 8:30 this morning, I stayed in bed for about an hour mildly conscious just being a bum. I finally grabbed my iPad to check Youtube for some detox yoga videos.

I came across a jewel!

Yoga with Adriene is a really cool, down to earth YT channel. Adriene is easy going, but she challenges her yogis to push a little to get the full yoga experience. I quickly added three sessions to my YT playlist, rolled out of bed, grabbed my yoga mat, and turned my living room into a studio. And what an experience! So glad I did it.

I started with a 20min Morning Yoga session

Then I went onto a 20 min Flow Yoga Vinyasa Sequence

I planned to to complete the Detox session, but I decided to stop and give my body a rest. That Vinyasa sequence was a refreshing challenge. I may do the detox later today.

After yoga I settled down with a cozy cup of coffee and a delicious everything bagel egg sandwich.

What’s in My Kitchen?

I had yesterday off. So I did my favorite pastime, grocery shopping! For reals, I love going grocery shopping. I’d do it for people if I could.

So what did I get?

First stop Whole Foods.

I got a package of organic power greens, walnuts and raisins, and organic strawberries. I could have gotten these items from Trader Joe’s where I did this weeks shopping, but I like these specific items that are sold at Whole Foods. Picky much? Yes. Yes I am. Besides I had to go to Whole Foods to pick up a vitamin supplement. I have been slacking in this area. Shame, shame. So I decided to get on a good foot. These vitamins by Mega Food are vegan friendly made to supplement a vegan diet. I’m not vegan, but I need all of the nutrients that are packed into this tablet. Specifically iron and B12.

They are a little expensive. Even the sale price for $38.99, marked down from the original $48.99, is steep. But this is my health. I’d rather pay this much now than face major hospital fees later.

Then I headed to Trader Joe’s. Well, I got a cup of Starbucks decaf first, then I went to Trader Joe’s.

I got the bulk of my groceries from Trader Joe’s this week. I alternate between Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s depending on what of my favorite products that I need most.

This week’s grocery list:

(Starting from the top photo)

Frozen edamame, frozen pineapples, frozen Very Cherry blend, frozen Blueberries, frozen sliced leeks, a red onion, shredded carrots, zucchini, squash, cucumbers

(Second photo)

Multigrain bread, a bag of gala apples, almond butter, super fruits jelly, tempeh, baby bella mushrooms, cauliflower, coconut milk, bran flakes, kale, grapes

And of course I could not help but creating fabulous meals. For lunch I had a fresh green salad.

and for dinner I found a fabulous recipe for beet burgers from my favorite site Sweet Potato Soul. I did a few things different, but the meal was just as tasty.

Stay tuned for my recipe and a complete breakdown of this meal including the honey glazed heirloom carrots.

Ikea Dreaming

Well I am back from vacation.

I had a wonderful time in Nashville. Check out The Dope Librarian for a post about my trip.

Now I am just enjoying the last few weeks of summer and the last few weeks of freedom before my grad classes start at the end of the month.

I’m almost done. Staying focused!

Monday I went shopping at Ikea. I love this place. I often go to get design inspiration and dream about the fabulous kitchen that I want.

I can see it now…

Glass upper cabinets…

…and dark lower cabinets.

With a beautiful creamy countertop.

Preferably a sustainable material.

And a fabulous apron sink and beautiful facet fixtures.

One a day a reno will happen. One day.

Until than I dream and collect pieces.

I got two stem glasses to add to the two that I already have. They were $1.99 a piece. The spice jars were $3.00 for the pack of 4. The green trays are ice trays they were $1.99 each. I got two glass plates for $.99 each. I now have a total of 8. I will continue to collect these because they are simple and go well with my dishes that have designs. The salad utensils were $1.99 for the pair. The most “expensive” purchase was the tray costing $9.99. A deal nonetheless.

Shopping for little pieces like these is my favorite thing to do. Because I didn’t have dishes when I first moved, I have no problem taking opportunities to get new things. I have a ton of things that I want. Like a large wok, a dutch oven, a juicer, and a Vitamix. But I am perfectly content with getting what I want one purchase at a time. I mean I do have a 30 year mortgage. LOL! My kitchen isn’t going anywhere.
